The Medicine Hat General Hospital, built in 1888-1890, was the first hospital in the entire Northwest Territories and the only one - between Winnipeg and Vancouver. Donations have been an important part of local healthcare from the very beginning. In fact, the original hospital was funded almost entirely from donations.
